What is Heart Disease?

Heart disease is a broad term that encompasses any condition that impedes the proper function of the heart. This can be an issue of the valves, the blood vessels, and other structural abnormalities.

Often, heart disease can result in a condition known as congestive heart failure. When the heart can’t pump blood normally, fluid builds up inside and outside the lungs, and even occasionally around the abdomen. Heartworm disease, heart arrhythmias, and valvular disease can also result in congestive heart failure.

Signs of Heart Disease in Dogs and Cats

Your pet might have a heart condition if they exhibit any of the following signs. When in doubt, contact our Vaughn Road or Carter Hill veterinarians to schedule an exam.

  • Loss of appetite
  • Rapid breathing
  • Labored breathing
  • Coughing frequently
  • Weak/easily tired
  • Lethargic

To check your pet for any heart issues, we’ll start with a physical examination and potentially perform X-rays, electrocardiograms, and even ultrasounds to make the best diagnosis.
